About The Heart’s Voice

May 8, 2010

This site exists for that exact moment when you realize that something in your heart is calling  you… and another part of you is holding back.

The call might be a longing, a whim, a deep desire, a brilliant flash of inspiration or even just a vague dissatisfaction. But whatever it is, another part of you has said no and put the brakes on.

I call this “resistance” – which just means anything inside you or outside you that seems to be standing in the way of what you really want.

We’re mostly taught that resistance is “bad” and that there’s something “wrong” if we’re not moving forward.

I’m on a mission to completely CHANGE the way you look at resistance so you can follow the voice  of your heart and change yourself and your world for the better.

Every call of your heart, whether it’s a whisper or a shout, is an invitation to a journey of transformation that will lead you straight to who you’ve always wanted to be!

When you understand that your resistance is the very raw material that will become the new you, you can approach it with compassion and curiosity instead of battling to just make it go away.

And in the process, you can learn a completely new way of relating to yourself, with encouragement, compassion and appreciation, that will forever change the way you motivate yourself and tell the story of your heroic life.

And you just might find yourself changing the world from that new place!

Imagine how good it will feel to stop judging your process and truly allow and thank every part of it!

And imagine seeing yourself transform with each step you take and loving who you’re becoming in the process!

If that sounds like the kind of progress you’re looking for, be sure to check out 15 Minutes a Day to Outsmarting Your Resistance – my quick start guide to turning your obstacles into fuel.

Or, if one-on-one support is what you’re looking for, you can go directly to my Coaching page.

I truly hope the resources on this site will help you take the very important steps you’re feeling called to.

About the Author

I’m Susan Johnstone, founder of The Heart’s Voice. I’ve been leading people into the depths of their own hearts (and comfort zones!)  for 16 years through coaching, teleclasses and in-person retreats and seminars.Susan Johnstone

20 years ago, I was as hard on myself as anyone I’ve ever met.

I had been raised to be a perfectionist and I almost never felt safe anywhere.  I thought I wanted to find my purpose – and a part of me really did – but mostly I wanted a way to compensate for the fact that I felt I had no value.

I’ve been digging into what makes people tick for most of my life.

Here are the highlights:

  • I received my B.Sc. in Molecular Genetics at the University of Alberta and did medical research for 3 years (I quit when the repetition, boredom and lack of meaning left me clinically depressed)
  • I spent the next 21 years in the personal and professional development industry, including 13 years with an international seminar company
  • For 8 years I designed and facilitated corporate team building programs.
  • I was on the 7-person team that opened one of the largest day spa / wellness centres in North America in 1998, which allowed me to explore over 25 healing and counselling modalities.
  • I opened my private coaching practice in Calgary in 1996
  • I completed 2 years of intense voice and breath work with a master facilitator to free my own authentic voice and went on to support and facilitate others (that’s where the name “The Heart’s Voice” came from!)
  • I completed a research project  in 2004 with 150 people identifying the factors that were preventing them from speaking up
  • I coached new venture owners to use their passion to ask for millions in angel investments
  • I spent 8 months helping entrepreneurs find their voice and their core message and craft products around their passions

I’ve worked with hundreds of clients in a wide range of areas including physical and emotional trauma, chronic illness, depression, self- esteem issues, shadow, core wounds, life mission, self-expression, voice work, creativity, family dynamics and much more.

Yet, through all this, learning to have compassion has been the single most life changing thing on my journey.

Its opened the door to a deep acceptance, connection and sense of belonging to Life. And its led to a profound and radical “OK-ness” that continues to grow in me every day.

In Gratitude

The Sufi’s say that we will each be known by our fruit – by what we offer and by the legacy that our lives leave in the world. The fact that I have any fruit to offer you at all is due to the Grace of the Beloved (my word for the Divine) in guiding me to my many teachers along the way and especially my teachers and family in The Way of the Heart.

My fruit tree flourishes because it has grown on a steady diet of THEIR fruit, their teachings and offerings. And their fruit has been nourished by their teachers, and so on through the ages. Without this living fountain, my fruit tree would still be a short stick coming out of the ground with a few scrawny leaves on it.

I’m grateful to be able to offer back all that I’ve received.
