About The Heart’s Voice

This site exists for that exact moment when you realize that something in your heart is calling to you… and you’re not really  moving toward it. It might be a longing, a whim, a deep desire, a brilliant flash of inspiration or even just a vague dissatisfaction. But whatever it is, some part of you has said no and put the brakes on.

We all have moments like that, but we live in a culture that teaches us a lot of crazy stories about what’s going on when we encounter our own blocks, procrastination, self-sabotage and resistance and the first thing most of us do is beat ourselves up about it – which is the one thing that’s guaranteed to make it worse!

I’m on a mission to completely change the way you look at resistance and the stories you tell about it so you can follow the voice  of your heart and change yourself and your world for the better.

Every call of your heart, whether its a whisper or a shout, is an invitation to a journey of transformation that will lead you straight toward who you’ve always wanted to be!

Some calls might seem small and all about you, and some might seem big and about changing your world, but the truth is – ALL transformation changes the world, even the work you do on yourself.

When you understand that your resistance is the very raw material that will become the new you, you can approach it with compassion and curiosity instead of battling to just make it go away.

And in the process, you can learn a completely new way of relating to yourself, with encouragement, compassion and appreciation, that will forever change the way you motivate yourself and tell the story of your heroic life.

And you just might find yourself changing the world from that new place!

Imagine how good it will feel to stop judging your process and truly allow and bless every part of it!

And imagine seeing yourself transform with each step you take and loving who you’re becoming in the process!

If that sounds like the kind of progress you’re looking for, I hope you’ll stay awhile and do some exploring. If you’re ready for more, you’re welcome to sign up to receive  my monthly newsletter and free e-course to help you ‘Keep Saying Yes’ to the call of your heart.

And if you haven’t seen it yet, I have a special message for you. That’s the very best place for you to begin.
A Message for Your Heart

About the Author

I’m Susan Johnstone, founder of The Heart’s Voice. I’ve been leading people into the depths of their own hearts (and comfort zones!)  for 12 years through coaching, teleclasses and in-person retreats and seminars.Susan Johnstone

20 years ago, I was as hard on myself as anyone I’ve ever met. I had been trained to be a perfectionist and I almost never felt emotionally safe anywhere.  I thought I wanted to find my purpose – and a part of me really did – but mostly I wanted a way to compensate for the fact that I felt I had no value.

I’ve been digging into what makes people tick for most of my life. After receiving a B.Sc. in Molecular Genetics at the University of Alberta, and managing medical research labs, I spent the next 15 years in the personal and professional development industry, including 3 years with an international seminar company and 8 years facilitating corporate team building programs. I was also Wellness Director at one of the largest day spas and wellness centres in North America, which allowed me to explore over 25 healing and counseling modalities.

I opened my private coaching practice in 1996, in Calgary, and I’ve worked with hundreds of clients in a wide range of areas including physical and emotional trauma, chronic illness, depression, self- esteem issues, shadow, core wounds, life mission, self-expression, voice work, creativity, family dynamics and much more.

Learning how to have compassion has been the single most life changing thing I’ve learned on this journey. Its opened the door to a deep acceptance, connection and sense of belonging to Life. And its led to a profound and radical “OK-ness” that continues to grow in me every day.

Some things you might (or might not) want to know about me:

  • My inner and outer hearing has defined my whole experience of life. I would give up my sight before my hearing any day and my ability to hear peoples’ hearts is my superpower.
  • When I was 24, I put everything I owned in a Dodge Diplomat and left Calgary for Kelowna, BC to keep myself from going insane at a job I hated (and I vowed that I would never do work I hated again!)
  • I consider myself a mystic (meaning one who seeks a direct connection with the  divine Source of life) and I read a steady diet of books by mystics of many different traditions
  • I’ve coached start-up tech companies to ask for millions in venture capital by helping them to use their passion and who they really are to get support for their vision
  • I spent 8 months helping entrepreneurs find their voice and their message and craft products around their passions
  • I performed in the 1988 Olympic Opening Ceremonies in Calgary in front of 60,000 people live doing 2-step and swing (I later went on to compete in the Las Vegas Open Dance Championships in 2-step, and I have the neon turquoise and silver satin jacket to prove it!)
  • I was always the one my friends called to mediate their arguments and nowadays I use this skill to help my clients mediate between the conflicting voices inside them.
  • I deeply love exploring and I’ve seen at least 35 of 50 American states and 9 of 10 Canadian provinces (mostly by car) plus Italy, England, most of Scandinavia, Mexico and Turkey. I’m working towards being location independent so I can see a lot more of the world.
  • I’ve been empathic since I was a child, which means I can feel the emotions that other people are feeling. I was in my twenties before I started figuring out that most of these feelings weren’t mine and in hindsight its been the greatest source of my compassion for others.
  • In March 2007, after 8 months of nomadic house-sitting, my husband David and I drove 5000 km across Canada from Calgary to our new home in Blue Rocks, Nova Scotia (although when we left we didn’t know where our new home would be!)
  • I’ve always been too sweet to be cool or edgy, although I tried hard to lose the sweetness in high school.
  • I will never, ever, ever, ever make you feel wrong or ashamed, EVER.

In Gratitude

The Sufi’s say that we will each be known by our fruit – by what we offer and by the legacy that our lives leave in the world. The fact that I have any fruit to offer you at all is due to the Grace of the Beloved (my word for the Divine) in guiding me to my many teachers along the way and especially my teachers and family in The Way of the Heart.

My fruit tree flourishes because it has grown on a steady diet of THEIR fruit, their teachings and offerings. And their fruit has been nourished by their teachers, and so on through the ages. Without this living fountain, my fruit tree would still be a short stick coming out of the ground with a few scrawny leaves on it.

I’m grateful to be able to offer back all that I’ve received.
